Regina Spektor

People of the world, the queen has returned.

Regina Spektor has announced that 30th September will mark the release Remember Us to Life, her first album since 2012’s beautiful What We Saw from the Cheap Seats. Alongside this news was the release of ‘Bleeding Heart’, her newest single and the album’s opening track. Catchy as you’d expect, and so wonderfully crafted, ‘Bleeding Heart’ is difficult not to adore.

Admirably unconventional and distinguishable, Spektor’s music has never been one to characterise. But it is right to claim that ‘Bleeding Heart’ fits perfectly among the highs of Regina Spektor’s eclectic musical history, akin to ‘Dance Anthem of the 80s’ and ‘Oh Marcello’. It begins slowly and beautifully, hinting at sombre undertones, only lifted by Spektor’s signature piano pieces. The lyrics, earnest and motivating, balance the music’s rapid change. The song’s turn is a hybrid synth / drum drop, bringing an exciting dynamic to the song. It rises, falls and ends in a grace that can only be attributed to a truly gifted musician.

If this song is anything to go by, 30th September will be a good day.
