Following on from the Golden Globes awards ceremony, the BAFTA nominations are upon us—and they bring with them as much intrigue as ever.

Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin is one of the standout names to feature, joining his Sing Sing co-star Colman Domingo on the awards shortlist after he missed out on the Globes’ slate.

The pair have been nominated for Supporting Actor and Leading Actor respectively for the moving film, based on a real New York prison. Maclin is one of many to star who has been incarcerated there. Sing Sing also secured a much-deserved Adapted Screenplay nod.

Films joining Sing Sing on three nominations include Gladiator II and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, whilst Conclave and Emilia Pérez lead the way with 12 and 11 respectively.

Edward Berger and Jacques Audiard, the directors of the two films to reach double figure nominations, along with their stars Ralph Fiennes and Karla Sofía Gascón, have picked up recognition. Isabella Rossellini, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez all feature in the Supporting Actress category too.

With the BAFTAs of course being British, there are plenty of nominees for home talents, making the omission of Daniel Craig all the more surprising. Luca Guadagnino’s two 2024 films, Queer and Challengers, are both absent, even after the James Bond actor’s performance in the former received rave reviews from across the globe.

A Brit nominated ahead of Craig was Hugh Grant, the 64-year-old performing excellently with trademark devilish charm in A24 production Heretic. Saoirse Ronan, meanwhile, received a sixth BAFTA nomination of her career for The Outrun, telling the story of Amy Liptrot’s struggles with addiction in the heartbreaking way that only she knows how.

Dune: Part Two is one film whose love from the audience hasn’t been matched by the various voting bodies, so for it to receive seven BAFTA nominations is a huge plus. Denis Villeneuve has earned his props in the Best Director category, and the production has received a number of technical nods including Cinematography and Sound Design.

Rounding things out with two more unique categories, Outstanding British Film and the EE Rising Star award. There are some obvious nominations for Outstanding British Film, but Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding and Andrea Arnold’s Bird are welcome additions.

There has been some debate about the Rising Star award given the longevity that a couple of the nominees have already displayed in the industry: Marisa Abela, Jharrel Jerome, David Jonsson, Mikey Madison and Nabhaan Rizwan make up the quintet. This award is voted for by the public.

Abela is perhaps best known for portraying Amy Winehouse in Back to Black, Jerome has followed up marvellous roles in Moonlight and When They See Us with Prime originalUnstoppable, Jonsson delighted many in Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus, Madison is of course the titular Anora and Rizwan leads the way in British drama In Camera.

Interestingly enough, three of the five nominees‚Abela, Jonsson and Rizwan—feature prominently in the highly-rated Industry, a HBO original show that also stars Myha’la and Harry Lawtey.
