Shakespeare’s Globe have announced their summer season, which will run from April to October 2023.
From 27 April to 12 August, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream will run, directed by artistic director of Pentabus Theatre Elle While and starring Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe Michelle Terry as Puck (Cordelia and Fool, King Lear; Viola, Twelfth Night; Hotspur, Henry IV Part 1). While has previously directed The Merry Wives of Windsor (2019), Hamlet and As You Like It (2018) for the Globe.
The Comedy of Errors, directed by Sean Holmes, the Globe associate artistic director, will run from 12 May to 29 July. Sean Holmes’ previous directorial work for the Globe includes The Winter’s Tale (2023), The Tempest (2022), Twelfth Night (2021), Hamlet (2021), Metamorphoses (2021), Henry VI and Richard III (2020), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2019).
Macbeth will run from 21 July to 28 October. It will be directed by Abigail Graham, following her production of The Merchant of Venice, which took place at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Ellen McDougall is directing As You Like It, which will run from 18 August to 29 October. As well as being the artistic director of the Gate Theatre from 2017 to 2022, McDougall has previously directed Othello at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for the Globe.
Midsummer Mechanicals, The Globe’s production for families and young people, will return to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 22 July to 26 August. This will be directed by Lucy Cuthbertson (co-director of education) and Kerry Frampton, is written by Kerry Frampton and Ben Hales, and will also run at the Shakespeare North Playhouse from 15 to 18 July, making it the first Globe production to visit the replica Shakespearean theatre.
These will accompany the previously announced return of Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank, the Globe’s flagship project for state secondary schools. This will feature a production of The Tempest created especially for young people, directed by Diane Page (Julius Caesar, UK Tour, 2022). Public performances will accompany the schools project, on 18 March to 15 April.
The Globe’s first associate director residency will take place in 2023, with Naeem Hayat and Indiana Lown-Collins beginning their tenures as resident associate directors.
