Wizards of Waverly Place alumni Selena Gomez and David Henrie are set to reprise their roles in a sequel series greenlit by Disney Channel.

The two will be taking on executive producer roles, and though Gomez will only appear in the series premiere, Henrie will again inhabit the main role of Justin Russo throughout the series.

The show, named Wizards, will be written and executive produced by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, the pair behind Disney Channel comedy spinoff, Raven’s Home.

The series will follow Justin (Henrie) as he attempts to lead an ordinary life with his family: Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). However, the arrival of Justins’ sister Alex (Gomez) along with Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) seeking his aid will throw a serious spanner in the works. To help them, Justin must revive his magical powers to mentor the wizard-in-training, and balance both his everyday responsibilities and his attempts to protect the future of the Wizard World.

President of Disney Branded Television said: “Wizards of Waverly Place captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere. We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of Wizards inviting longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David, and our incredible cast and crew.”

A recent image release by Disney Plus’s Instagram account shows Alex and Justin reunited in a scene reminiscent of one from the original series, which is sure to be a source of nostalgia.

Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss the news.

The original series ran on Disney Channel from 2007-2012 to great success. It followed a family of wizards whose children vie for the privilege of being the one sibling who can keep their powers. Gomez, Henrie, and Jake T. Austin starred in the roles of Alex, Justin, and Max Russo respectively. In 2010 The Wizards of Waverly Place won the BAFTA Children’s Award for Best International show, and a few years later it scooped up a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Programme, so it is no surprise they are giving the show a spinoff.

Other stars from the series are likely to return, such as David DeLuise (Jerry Russo), Maria Canals Barrera (Theresa Russoz), Janice LeAnne Brown, and Mimi Gianopulos. New cast members appearing in the show include Max Matenko and Alkaio Thiele, who are set to play Justin’s sons.

Production will begin in April, and though no exact release date has not been given, it is expected that the series will premiere in the Autumn.
