The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) have confirmed they will restart live performances in Stratford-upon-Avon this summer, opening with an outdoor production of The Comedy of Errors.

Directed by Phillip Breen, the production will be staged in the newly created Garden Theatre – a specially constructed outdoor performance space.

Gregory Doran, the RSC’s Artistic Director, commented saying “these have and will continue to be challenging times, but we look forward with optimism.

“The outdoor theatre gives us the security that we can perform to good sized audiences as we emerge from the pandemic and prepare for news on the government roadmap’s ‘no earlier than’ dates.”

This announcement comes at the same time as the RSC announce the broadcasting of their 2020 production of The Winter’s Tale, set to air in April.

The Winter’s Tale and The Comedy of Errors were due to begin performances in March and April 2020 respectively, and were preparing to reopen when the COVID-19 pandemic forces theatres to closed.

Doran went on to explain that “as we approach the anniversary of the temporary closure of theatres due to the pandemic, it is fantastic to announce future plans and look ahead to audiences returning to Stratford in the summer… we cannot wait to welcome our audiences back.”

Details including the cast and creative team, as well as a full performance schedule and box office details for The Comedy of Errors, will be announced in mid-April. Further programming information is expected to be announced soon.
