Nearly 18 years since the show’s first airing and after almost a year and a half of waiting, FX has announced that The Gang will be gracing our screens once again with the announcement of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s return. The long-running show’s sixteenth season will air on 7 June 2023.

Headed by “Mac” MacDonald (Rob McElhenney), Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day), Dennis Reynolds (Glenn Howerton), Dee Reynolds (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito), the show follows the antics of a rag-tag group of Philadelphians as they run an Irish Pub.

Viewers can expect more of the outlandish plot points that have become synonymous with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, per a press release on the latest series. According to Deadline, “this year alone, Mac battles with allergies and long-distance dating, Charlie takes on his long-forgotten sisters, Dee fights for rent control and women’s athletics, Frank wrestles for his gun, and Dennis struggles to improve his mental health.”

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s previous season spent much of its run in Ireland. The Gang cross the pond in search of heritage and hopes of finding inspiration for their pub, Paddy’s. The season’s final episode aired on 22 March 2022, receiving generally positive critical and audience receptions through its continued ability to provide new and fresh takes on the show’s outrageous style of humour.

Although It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is sometimes a relatively polarising and controversial show, the show’s longevity is a testament to the dedication of its fanbase and their desire for more of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s unique brand of comedy. On the heels of season 15’s success, audiences should be optimistic for another instillation of the show’s witty and unconventional brand of humour.

You can stream seasons 1-15 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Netflix in the UK.
