Visible Delight Theatre Company have announced the premiere of a queer reimagining of Mary Shelley’s renowned gothic novel Frankenstein entitled I, Victor.
The show will run at The Golden Goose Theatre from Tuesday 2 August to Thursday 4 August.
Directed by Jacob Freda, and produced by Gabriella Sills, this one-woman play captures the macabre atmosphere of the original while adding its own modern twist.
Consumed by grief after losing her loved one, Vic seeks to bring her lover back to life by any means necessary. As her obsession for serial killer documentaries and Mary Shelley continues to fuel her murderous habit, she starts to question whether anyone can truly be brought back after leaving our lives. In a production that promises to leave audiences both “disgusted and delighted”, I, Victor blends humour and horror in this exploration of human psychology, examining just how far we are willing to go for our loved ones.
Katie Keet stars as Vic with Poppy Charlton also credited as a voiceover artist.
The show’s writer Issy Flower delves into the inspiration for her modern reworking. She commented on how modern takes on the ‘Frankenstein’ myth overlook key themes of the original source material: “These versions ignore themes of male violence towards women, the queer undertones and the implications of what it means to construct a body and your own identity.”
“I am also fascinated by the grieving process and by serial killers…Stick these in a blender when I am trying to avoid admin work, and you have I, Victor.” she added.
