“Ferb, I know what we’re going to do today…” because Phineas and Ferb is returning to our screens! The iconic Disney animated show has been commissioned by Disney Branded TV for an additional forty episodes, spread between two seasons.
The announcement was made by Disney Branded Television president, Ayo Davis, in a presentation given at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. It was then confirmed by show creator Dan Povenmire, who also voices hapless villain Dr Heinz Doofenshmirtz, in a video on his social media. The revival comes as part of an overall deal with Povenmire, which also sees the renewal of his show Hamster & Gretel.
The original run of Phineas and Ferb aired between 2008 to 2015, and became a cult favourite during its time on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The series is renowned for its catchy soundtrack (written by pop-punk icons Bowling for Soup) its memorable catchphrases, and the sheer audacity of its antics. It starred a number of beloved Disney Channel stars including Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical), Mitchell Musso (Hannah Montana) and Alyson Stoner (Camp Rock). Vincent Martella (Everybody Hates Chris) and Thomas Sangster (Game of Thrones) starred as the eponymous brothers. While it is yet unknown how much of the original cast will return, they have been seen to respond positively to the news on social media.
The show centred around two step-brothers during their summer holiday, as they sought more and more adventurous ways to fill their vacation time, and their older sister Candace became more and more frustrated at their schemes. Meanwhile, each episode would see their pet platypus, Perry, sneak off to fight crime as secret agent, Perry the Platypus, often against his nemesis Doofenshmirtz.
While the show stopped airing in 2015, Disney released a spin-off movie in 2020, called Candace Against the Universe. In a news release about the new episodes, Povenmire said, “It has been the greatest pleasure of my career to see how an entire generation of kids and parents have embraced the characters and the humour of Phineas and Ferb… I’m eagerly looking forward to diving back into the show for them and for a whole new generation.”
It is currently unknown when the new series is expected to air.
