Paul McCartney took to social media after teasing a new album. He shared the news of his new DIY solo album, McCartney III, offering a glimpse of a 45 second trailer.
40 yeas after his last DIY solo album, Paul McCartney has announced the release of his third, McCartney III. Like the previous self-titled albums, McCartney III is a completely solo affair. It is built from mostly live takes of McCartney on vocals, with him also playing all of the instruments; varying from guitar, to piano, to drumming. McCartney wrote, performed, and produced everything on his own. He said, “it was about making music for yourself rather than making music that has to do a job.”
The label blurb tells us that “McCartney III spans a vast and intimate range of modes and moods, from soul searching to wistful, from playful and raucous and all points in-between.”
In an interview with Loud and Quiet, McCartney claimed the new album was ‘kind of unintentional.” The cancellations of his summer plans, such as headlining Glastonbury and European Tour plans, lead to McCartney having a lot of time on his hands. He claimed that his fall-back situation was to “write and record,” and claimed that the “Rockdown” provided an opportunity for him to do this.
The photos for McCartney I and McCartney II were shot by his late wife, Linda. Keeping the familial structure, the photographs were shot by his daughter, Mary, and his nephew.
Despite rumours of McCartney, who is 78, retiring soon, the artist shows no signs of slowing down with his new album release. He claimed that “everything I do is always supposed to be my last.”
Whilst no tracking list has been announced yet, the album is available for pre-order.
