Nick & Jess // New Girl

New_girl_10

A girl moves into a flat with three boys: the Hollywood ideal is that she’s bound to fall in love with one of them. New Girl undoubtedly ticks the boxes on the cliché list, but it doesn’t stop the show from being so enjoyable. The relationship between the new girl Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) and roommate Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) was a will-they-won’t-they even past the kiss – you know, the “I meant something like that” kiss that made everyone die a tiny bit – right until they finally got together at Cece’s wedding, just after Taylor Swift arrived and ran away with the groom (I honestly don’t know why everyone in the whole world doesn’t watch this show).

The entertaining part of their relationship was the way Nick and Jess were so wrongly fitted together – which was the reason they inevitably broke up – but it seemed like it worked so well. The characters bounced off each other’s quirkiness and faults, making them quite perfect in a completely dysfunctional way. It wasn’t until they realised that the only thing they had in common was their love for each other when they knew they had to break up; it was so fun to watch before, especially Jess’ birthday surprise, when Nick organised for a film to be made of their friends saying lovely things about Jess, and when they were invited to a party at Prince’s house (like, actual Prince) and said ‘I love you’ for the first time. I hope that isn’t the end for Nick and Jess; I mean, they have to end up together. They can’t just leave it like that, can they?
