Richard & Kate // Castle
March 2009 saw the start of a fire-cracking relationship that would continue until present day. Although the future of ABC’s crime drama Castle is currently under speculation, it’s undeniable that the relationship between writer Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) will last a life time.
From episode one, the chemistry between the two protagonists was undeniable – Castle’s boyish charm and wild imagination instantly clashed with Beckett’s sensible and controlled personality. It took less than one episode for Castle to latch onto Beckett, declaring the detective his new muse for his next best selling novel, Heat Wave that would depict the life of fictional NYPD Detective Nikki Heat. The strong reluctance from Beckett and Castle’s interference within each case never fails to provide a comedic element and a light relief from the sometimes dark murder cases.
Whilst the spark between Castle and Beckett was instant, it took four slow and long seasons for the two to finally admit their feelings for each other. During the time it took for the two to reveal their feelings, the two got trapped in an industrial freezer, dealt with a killer obsessed with Beckett’s fictional persona, and collaborated with both the FBI and CIA. It’s undeniable that the four seasons were not without their frustrating moments, so many episodes where the two could have revealed their feelings but didn’t, annoying to say the least but definitely made the moment where the two finally came together even more satisfying.
Ultimately, the time taken for Castle and Beckett become romantic partners is what makes the two such a marvelous couple, and in my opinion the most realistic on television. The amount of fictional troupes that had been used to prevent them getting together might lose them the title of perfect fictional couple, but that definitely doesn’t stop them from being perfect for each other.
