With Wandavision finally premiering on Disney+, we have our first look at Marvel Studios’ foray into television. The strange sitcom spoof is already baffling viewers, and although Marvel is often criticised for its cookie-cutter movie formula, the new show signals that they are open to taking risks in the domain of television. Out of the eleven other series scheduled to be released, Moon Knight is without a doubt the most mysterious.

Oscar Isaacs has reportedly been cast as playing the lead role of Marc Spector aka Moon Knight, an announcement that has Marvel fans thrilled. Known for his starring role in the recent Star Wars sequel trilogy as ace Resistance fighter pilot Poe Dameron, Isaacs has also received critical praise for his work in the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis and Alex Garland’s Ex Machina.

His onscreen charisma and moral versatility make him the perfect fit to play Spector, an anti-hero that is constantly wrestling with the multiple personalities within himself. Likened to DC’s Batman, Moon Knight is one of Marvel’s strangest characters. His moon-based powers were granted by the Egyptian moon god Khonsu, a fact the comics consistently refuse to confirm or deny whether they are real or just a figment of Spector’s own wild imagination.

The crossroads between mental illness and superheroism that the character of Moon Knight explores makes the six-episode miniseries seem a really exciting prospect for Marvel fans who crave something different from the MCU. With Deadpool 3 also being announced as being part of the larger universe and being R-rated, we can only hope that Moon Knight will also be able to explore some more adult themes and ideas.

As well as Isaacs, Ethan Hawke will also reportedly be part of the show as its primary antagonist. Nothing is known about Hawke’s character yet, but the face-off between the two is already an exciting prospect. Hawke is a truly versatile actor, with his onscreen credits including a starring role in Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day, and science-fiction films Gattaca and Predestination. He is not known for playing the villain, but this makes his casting all the more intriguing.

Moon Knight is scheduled to be released in 2022 so we still have a lot of time to wait. It might also be a long time before we receive any more information about the show considering Marvel’s stacked film and television slate. However, the casting news is more than enough reason to get excited about what could be one of Marvel’s most weird and wonderful projects to date.
