Gallus
Gallus are another example of Glasgow’s rough and ready indie rock scene. Their music invokes a fiery energy that cannot be matched. The sound is truly enthralling, with its fast pace, incredible guitar work, and raw vocals. The boys have been making noise since their formation in 2018, with a string of memorable live performances gaining them a rabid and loyal fanbase. Gallus have produced classics such as ‘Marmalade’ and ‘Actual Factual’, two songs that show the range the boys have. With ‘Actual Factual’ has a slower pace and a more raw vocal range, whilst ‘Marmalade’ puts both the guitar and drums in focus.
Gallus unfortunately had what was set to be a bumper year for them, put on hold by the pandemic. They discussed the struggle and admitted: “The pandemic has impacted us much the same way as it has any other band or anyone who works in the live industries and we’re a little lost. We all have jobs or study but gigging and being a band is what we all really want to do and build our lives around. Needless to say, as it comes up to a year since our last gig in front of an audience, we’re all feeling a bit down. We may have been quiet but we have been busy. We’re working on a lot of really exciting new music that I think people are going to love. Hopefully, we’ll get to release something very exciting in the near future too and have a big party when we do. I also actually think we’ve become a better band over lockdown. Hopefully, the Gallus you see when we’re out the other end is more exciting, fun, and interesting than the band you knew before, albeit a little hairier”.
2021 has the band set for a standout performance at TRNSMT, something which will expose them to a larger audience than ever before.
Russell Stewart
Russell Stewart is different from the majority of the list, as his music isn’t high tempo or something you’d necessarily stomp your feet to. Russell’s music is breathtaking. Russell has described himself as ‘Alt Soul’, a fit description for his chill and collective music. His style is perfect for those summertime drives. Russell is relatively new to the scene and only began releasing singles in 2019, but truly began strong with the amazing ‘Midsummer’. When talking about his plans for 2021, he said: “I’m excited to get more releases out this year and be able to show more sides of my music. I also just want to collaborate with more people on different projects and stay busy, even if it is done remotely. I’m not setting my hopes too high on gigs coming back but I’m hoping to be able to play live one way or another!”.
Russell Stewart may not be a household name in the scene just yet, but his willingness to blend genres and try new things has him at an advantage. 2021 is surely set to be an exciting year for him.
