The game’s already afoot as a new trailer drops for Rian Johnson’s much anticipated Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
A sequel of sorts to his 2019 box-office hit, Glass Onion sees the most welcome return of Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, the unconventional southern sleuth from Knives Out. One star that does not return however, is ‘The House’. The gothic, stony Boston manor that dominated the first film is swapped out for sunnier shores, as this time we see our beloved detective arrive – donning a delicious pink linen and power-blue scarf combo – on the private Greek island of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Ed Norton).
With a Balearic background, Johnson has Blanc follow in the footsteps of Agatha Christie’s globe-trotting detective Hercule Poirot, and much like the intrepid Belgian’s adventures, death isn’t too far behind. In a more expansive trailer, we find Benoit Blanc in attendance at what is supposed to be a murder-mystery themed weekend, but there are seemingly more layers to the proverbial onion. When an actual murder is committed, Blanc must cut through an eccentric cast of suspects in order to unravel the mystery and find the killer.
It’s a somewhat conventional set-up, but Johnson has proved keenly adept at handling the playful intricacies of the ‘whodunit’ genre, surprising audiences with the mid-movie reveal of Knives Out that set-in motion the film’s playful second act. With Glass Onion, Johnson invites audiences to play along once more, assembling an ensemble cast of potential murderers and shipping them off to the playground of the super-wealthy.
The film’s star-studded cast includes Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista, to name but a few. Killer looks, mysterious dialogue and cute quips follow in a trailer that doubles down on the things that made Knives Out a success, and persuaded Netflix to part with $469 million for the rights to the sequel. It’s a gamble that looks likely to pay off, with Blanc seemingly destined to join the pantheon of fictional detective greats.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery arrives on Netflix on 23 December.
