Starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman, A Good Person is a feature-length film directed and written by Zach Braff. Braff is working with familiar faces. He previously directed Pugh on the short film In the Time It Takes to Get There, as well as Freeman in Going In Style.

Opening with Freeman’s classic voiceover as his character Daniel, speaking of a “model train enthusiast” and an opening shot of Allison (Pugh) cutting her hair off, the trailer for A Good Person immediately draws viewers in. Allison is about to marry Nathan, Daniel’s son, but her sister-in-law dies in a car crash whilst she is driving. Dealing with racking guilt and bumping into who would have been her father-in-law, the root of the film’s story is clearly human connection.

In the short clip, viewers witness Daniel and Allison bonding at meetings, bridging their disconnect through Daniel venting about his granddaughter and the misunderstandings that come with raising a teenager. Braff’s ironic bird’s eye view of trains crossing bridges speaks to the film’s main message—connection and crossing bridges. The shot speaks to an immersive, visually-interesting film.

The trailer hints at drama, grief-ridden moments alleviated with comedy, and friendship. It promises another example of Pugh’s range and ability. Her recent features have been set predominantly in the past or historical contexts. With Oscar-winner Freeman by her side, A Good Person is likely to be an emotional roller-coaster with these actors taking the helm. Pugh and Freeman’s fellow cast members include Celeste O’Connor as Ryan, Molly Shannon as Diane and Chinaza Uche as Nathan (Allison’s husband-to-be). The film has a strong ensemble cast to build on the themes of family and friendship bound to be abundant throughout A Good Person.

A Good Person releases in cinemas on 24 March 2023 ahead of the Sky Cinema release in April 2023.
