Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, has died aged 54. Deadline has reported that the 17 Again actor was found unconscious in his home in L.A. and that the police are not treating his death as suspicious.

As one of the most beloved sitcoms in the world, Friends introduced millions of us to the weird and wonderful world of six unforgettable New Yorkers. Each and every cast member made their own unique mark on the hit show, but none more so than Matthew Perry.

Back in April 1995, before many Friends fans were even born, onto the screen came Chandler Bing. Portrayed by Perry, he was recognised as the hilarious and sarcastic one of the group, but also the most loveable. Later in the series, Perry would also play one half of Chandler and Monica—a couple that gave the show all the heart it needed to continue being a monumental success. With his quick quips, wit, and a whole lot of heart, how could we not fall in love with Chandler?

But it isn’t just Friends that Perry will be remembered for. The actor was open about his addiction struggles that began during his career, which he detailed in his book ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’. Following his recovery, he opened ‘Perry House’, a home for other men aiming towards sobriety. His selflessness and desire to help others were frequently mentioned in tributes.

In a statement, Perry’s family said: “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend.”

Co-stars also mourned the loss on social media, including Maggie Wheeler, who played on-screen ex Janice in ‘Friends’. In an Instagram post, she wrote: “What a loss. The world will miss you Matthew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

Other tributes have come from Canadian Prime Minister (and former schoolmate of Perry’s) Justin Trudeau, ‘Friends’ creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, and many more.
