The new teaser trailer for Netflix France’s infamous mystery thriller, Lupin, has just been released.
Starring Omar Sy as Assane Diop, the show follows his pursuit of revenge against the bourgeois Pellegrini family who long ago had framed his Senegalese father for the theft of an expensive diamond necklace. Twenty-five years later, and with a family of his own, Assane takes inspiration from the fictional thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin, to avenge his father.
Named among the most-viewed non-English Netflix series of all time in 2021, the release date for Part 3 is yet to be confirmed. Although Parts 1 and 2 were released within six months of each other in 2021, it is unlikely that Part 3 will reach our screens any sooner than early 2023.
Despite the show’s critical acclaim, a recurring judgement raised by reviewers is the sense that Part 2 does not quite match the boldness and originality of Part 1, but instead picks up from where it left off. Judging by the first scene in the teaser for Part 3, this message seems to have been received.
Opening to protagonist Assane Diop against a black backdrop, the narrative thus far is succinctly summed up by two statements he makes between snapshots of significant scenes from the first two parts. Fast-paced snippets of Assane disguised in plain sight overlay an ironically-timed recording of a news reporter declaring him as France’s most famous thief and nowhere to be found. Within seconds, the compelling and enigmatic features of the show are reintroduced to us.
Considering the reporter’s first line in the teaser, “Hero or criminal?”, we are drawn into an exploration of the double-edged nature of Assane’s character. What this may represent to the public is introduced in a later scene depicting protesters wearing a mask of Assane’s face during a demonstration. This is somewhat reminiscent of the Dalí mask worn by protagonists in the Spanish Netflix production, Money Heist, which became a worldwide symbol of resistance.
In addition to some new characters, we can expect to see recurring characters Claire (Ludivine Sagnier), Raoul (Etan Simon), Benjamin (Antoine Gouy), and potentially Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre), Gabriel Dumont (Vincent Garanger), and detective Guedira (Soufiane Gerrab).
Lupin is currently streaming on Netflix.
