The National Theatre have announced that three new live productions will be broadcast in cinemas worldwide as part of its winter season.

Anya Reiss’ adaptation of The Seagull will give Anton Chekhov’s classic tale its own modern twist, swapping provincial Russia for contemporary Britain. Jamie Lloyd will be directing following his Olivier award-winning production of Cyrano de Bergerac. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke will make her West End debut with this production, captured live on stage at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The show will be released in cinemas on 3 November 2022.

Arthur Miller’s classic tale The Crucible will also get its own modern revamp. Directed by Lyndsey Turner, this National Theatre production will star Erin Doherty (The Crown) and Brendan Cowell (Yerma) as Abigail Williams and John Proctor respectively.

Artistic Director Rufus Norris has discussed the play’s thematic content will easily translate to the modern political landscape: “A revival of this story of mass panic and collective delusion seems particularly timely.” He continues to state this would make for a “darkly thrilling production” which will be broadcast on 26 January 2023, reaching international audiences on 2 March 2023.

Clint Dyer’s new production of Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello will also be returning to the National Theatre and will be broadcast on 23 February 2023 in the UK and Ireland (internationally on 27 April). The cast will feature Hamilton star Giles Terera as the titular role, Rosy McEwen (The Alienist) as Desdemona and Paul Hilton (The Inheritance) as Iago.
