The cast has been announced for the modern adaptation of Alice in Wonderland at Liverpool Playhouse.

Described as “a riotous musical adventure for all the family’”, the show follows Alice, a music-loving girl who falls into “Wonderland” when trying to repair her father’s stereo. She meets some unlikely new friends, and battles against the Queen of Charts, a play on Carroll’s Queen of Hearts.

Olivier and Critics’ Circle Award Winner Leanne Jones will star as the Queen of Charts, alongside Liverpudlian actor Paislie Reed (CITV’s The New Worst Witch) as protagonist Alice. Supporting cast members include Daniel Carter-Hope (Dad Hatter/Play/Fast Forward), Natasha Lewis (Bibi/Queen of Clubz), Jerome Lincoln (Volume), Zweyla Mitchell Dos Santos (Lewis), Tomi Ogbaro (Bez/Jabberwock), John Pfumojena (Eject) and Steve Simmonds (Rewind/Record).

The show features original new music and lyrics by Olivier award-winning Vikki Stone, who took inspiration from “everything from disco to grime and pop to punk with everything in between.” It is produced in association with Stockroom and Theatre Royal Plymouth, and directed by former artistic director at Stockroom, Kate Wasserberg.

Suba Das, creative director at Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse said: “After the huge success of our Rock ‘n’ Roll panto and SIX last Christmas, we know our audiences love their bangers, adventurous heroines and battling queens, so this new Alice in Wonderland will be the perfect summer treat. With a clutch of Olivier Award winners alongside phenomenal local talent, I’m unbelievably proud that this is yet another production in my first year that brings the very best of British theatre right here to Liverpool.”

Alice in Wonderland will premiere at Liverpool Playhouse on 4 July (International Alice Day!) and will run until 22 July, when it will head to Theatre Royal Plymouth from 1-5 August. Ticket prices range from £11 to £41.
