Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has revealed she is creating and executive producing a new animated series, Pearl, as part of the partnership between Archewell Productions and Netflix.
Joining Meghan in producing Pearl (a working title) will be a seasoned and star-studded production team in David Furnish, Carolyn Soper and the Emmy-award winning Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan. Amanda Rynda will serve as showrunner.
In a statement, Furnish said he was delighted and “Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, and I are deeply passionate about bringing the inspirational and positive stories of extraordinary women from around the world to a global audience of all ages. The team collaborating on the series are first class, and Netflix are the perfect partner.”
Pearl is the second title to come from the multi-year deal between Archewell Productions and Netflix and the first to be animated. The animated series will follow a young girl’s adventures. Pearl has been billed as a family show and will, Meghan said, “celebrate extraordinary women throughout history” that inspire the 12-year old heroine in her day-to-day life.
Two years ago in their press release for the creation of Archewell Productions, the royal couple said that “as new parents, inspirational family programming” was important to them. Pearl reaffirms this and comes after the Duchess’ best-selling children’s book, The Bench, which achieved a similar aim. The Bench was praised for being inclusive in its focus of father-son relationships.
In many ways, Pearl appears to follow these same themes of family and be similarly inspirational and warm as the animated series will follow a 12-year old girl as she is inspired by a variety of influential women through history.
An expected release date is yet to be published.
