Whether Amanda Knox had any part in the murder of Meredith Kercher remains a topic for debate, but one thing can be certain: a limited series must be made. 17 years after the horrific crimes that took place in Perugia, Italy and five documentaries later, Hulu are now creating a limited series focusing on the events. And who better to play the controversial Knox than elite nepo-baby and Lana Del Rey muse, Margaret Qualley.

The daughter of Andie MacDowell, Qualley rose to fame due to her Emmy nominated roles in Fosse/Verdon (2019) and Netflix’s hit series Maid (2021), as well as her high profile marriage to Music Producer Jack Antonoff last August.

As if the case of Amanda Knox itself isn’t fascinating enough, the crew behind the currently untitled limited series will be produced by Knox herself and a fellow victim of the misogynistic media machine—Monica Lewinsky. Best known, unfortunately, for her part in Bill Clinton’s 1998 sex scandal, Lewinsky has spent recent years rectifying her public image and positioning herself as an activist against media-based bullying. Knox herself was also a victim of extreme public ridicule; a situation that arguably played a large part in her misconviction in Kercher’s murder, and led her to spend four years in an Italian prison.

The story of Amanda Knox has been most significantly represented in her self-titled Netflix documentary in 2016. The film, which received two Emmy nominations, posed  “a virtually airtight argument for [Knox’s] innocence” according to Wall Street Journal. Despite the general consensus that Knox is indeed innocent of the crimes in which she was initially convicted, her intense nature as well as her continual discussion of the case has brought understandable criticism. “Oh wow, I bet Meredith Kercher’s family are thrilled.” wrote one X user after Knox announced the series

Knox herself has spoken to how Kercher has been forgotten amidst the media frenzy, stating in her documentary “As soon as the prosecutor made this about ‘it has to be Amanda, it has to be Amanda’, they took away the fact this case is about her”. Who will portray Kercher in the upcoming series is yet to be announced, but it’s clear that Knox remains in control of this project and how the case, and her life afterward, will be displayed to audiences.

A release date is yet to be announced, but due to Hulu projects distribution being under the Disney+ banner in Europe, we can likely expect to see the series appear on the streaming service in the upcoming year.
