A Message To You Rudy // The Specials

On a far lighter note, ‘A Message To You Rudy’ by The Specials has been a constant part of my life throughout my 22 years. Since I was a nipper, my Dad has played this as we sang along on car journeys or danced away in the living room. There is also a strong meaning to the song, as with a lot of The Specials music and other ska bands of the time, the lyrics are rife with the pain and anger felt by the working class during the 1980’s and the regime of Maggie Thatcher. This adapted version of Jamaican singer Dandy Livingstone’s 1967 original is aimed at attempting to get young Rudy’s (criminal juveniles) to “better think of your future, or else you’ll wind up in jail.”
