Babooshka // Kate Bush
When I was around nine years old, my mum gave me a compilation video cassette of all the music videos from Kate Bush’s album The Whole Story. I would sit and watch the videos for hours on end, mesmerised by Kate Bush’s bizarre dancing, crazy hair and huge, staring eyes.
I came to love each and every track on that album, but my favourite was the song ‘Babooshka’. Being too young to interpret the full meaning and intelligence behind the song, I simply fell in love with the tone of ‘Babooshka’, and the angriness of the chorus. Kate Bush’s high-pitched voice and odd, art-rock vibe was like nothing I had ever seen or heard at the time, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Kate Bush is definitely a ‘love it or hate it’ type of artist, but she was the first female singer that I really took a liking to due to both her captivating vocals and her utterly eccentric style.
