My Life In Songs: Emmie Morris

Last Nite // The Strokes

By all means, this is not my favourite Strokes song, however, it was the first song I ever heard by The Strokes, which I feel is far more significant. A big chunk of my time from the ages of 12-14 was spent watching MTVRocks (which I am very embarrassed to admit) and to the joy of my 13-year-old wannabe indie kid self, I fell upon this dream of a record. The Strokes are, without a doubt, my favourite band ever, and ‘Last Nite’ was the song that sparked my love. Mesmerised (and almost drooling), I watched the music video in a state of awe: I’m still as of yet to witness anything cooler. If you watch close enough you’ll see that lead singer Julian Casablancas wears an elastic band around his wrist. Me, being young and impressionable, decided to adopt this for myself, and for a good few months I wore nothing but elastic bands as bracelets. I know, I know. Let’s not go there. Although, Julian Casablancas is still the closest thing I’ll ever get to a reincarnated version of God, so perhaps I am still wearing skinny jeans and wrecked converse in the hopes that one day I’ll be transported back in time to circa 2001 to see The Strokes live.
