Just Like Heaven // The Cure

Much like my love for ‘American Idiot’, ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ and artists like Wes Borland, Marilyn Manson and My Chemical Romance, theatrics have always been important for me and The Cure were important as part of big emo phase for me. We all have them. ‘Just Like Heaven’ is beautiful, bold and tinted with sadness. It also finds frontman Robert Smith at is most visceral with his lyrical paintbrush. The lines: “I opened up my eyes / And found myself alone alone / Alone above a raging sea / That stole the only girl I loved / And drowned her deep inside of me,” have always been my favourite.
The Cure were one of the first bands I was introduced to. I was raised on The Jam, Spandau Ballet, The Beautiful South, Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis (and an odd dabble in No Doubt which always surprised me) but it was the harrowing cries of Robert Smith which really made me stand up and pay attention. I have a morbid fascination with goth…cut me open, I’m made of liquorice.
