Live Forever // Oasis

My discovery of Oasis originates from a (What’s the Story) Moring Glory? CD knocking around my house. To this day I don’t know who it belongs to but it’s firmly in my CD rack – thanks kind donor. I soon overplayed the songs on that album and I needed fresh Oasis tracks. I heard ‘Live Forever’ many times before, it’s a pretty unavoidable song, but as music had become increasingly accessible through the internet I would play the song over and over again. Live forever is a song that fills me positivity and ambition. Through its uplifting lyrics and the infectiously empowering guitar solo at the bridge it’s easy to see how it influenced and continues to influence thousands of lives. At a time when grunge and Nirvana directly impacted youth culture, Noel Gallagher was inspired to write Live Forever.

“Nirvana had a tune called ‘I Hate Myself And I Want To Die.’ I was like, ‘I’m not fucking having that,’ Kids don’t need to hear that nonsense. Here was a guy who had everything and was miserable about it. We had fuck all, and I still thought getting up in the morning was the greatest fucking ever.”

A simple glistening chord progression, cavernous drums and simple lyrics gave an igniting alternative to Nirvana. Teens defined themselves by this song, by this band. I’m over 10 years too late to fully understand the significance of the Manchester band, but Live Forever is a song that instantaneously changes my outlook on things. Lyrics like “Maybe I will never be / All the things that I want to be / Now is not the time to cry / Now’s the time to find out why” are special regardless of what decade they are written in.
