When The Sun Goes Down // Arctic  Monkeys

Oasis had been the best band around for many years, my generation needed a band of that magnitude to call our own. The Arctic Monkeys famously burst onto the scene in 2006 with ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’. Around this time I was starting high school. They were the band that everyone liked. The ‘tunes’ would get sent round on our phones via Bluetooth and they would claim the place on my Bebo skin.

The quartet from Sheffield proved to be a catalyst in the mp3 era of music which cultivated a massive fan base. The stripped-down kinks riffs in a cocktail with Morrissey-like wit summed up ‘small-town’ England: “tracky bottoms tucked in socks”. ‘When the Sun goes down’ has always been one of my favourite songs by the Monkeys. I was way too young in my teens to see that it was a poignant song about prostitution. I did however believe it was cracking song for air guitaring along with my friends.
