Libraries Week is back, and this year’s showcase is a celebration of “the central role that libraries play in supporting life-long learning” in the words of organisers CILIP (the library and information association). Between 3-9 October 2022, CILIP and libraries all over the country are hosting a variety of events, which aim to inspire each and every participant to gain new skills and an awareness of how libraries can contribute to life-long learning.

The annual celebration showcases exactly what UK libraries of all shapes and sizes have to offer their local communities through the lens of a particular theme each year. Previous themes include ‘taking action and changing lives’ (2021) and ‘celebrating the role of libraries in a digital world’ (2019), with local libraries hosting a vast array of events from online poetry workshops and author talk series to an excitingly-named ‘evening of witchcraft’, among many others.

The theme of Libraries Week 2022 is ‘life-long learning’. Not to be outdone by previous years, this year’s annual celebration promises an exciting variety of events: ranging from ‘Storytime and Rhymetime’ in Caterham to a Library Walk hosted by South Tyneside Libraries and ‘Paned a Sgwrs Cymraeg’ in Rhyl, there’s a way for everyone to get involved. As well as events organised by local libraries, CILIPS (the Scottish branch of CILIP) are offering even more ways to get involved by launching their virtual guide to Managing a School Library and their inaugural Libraries Week Quiz.

Through this exciting week of activities and adventures, CILIP are helping libraries show how they can empower their communities by helping members of the community to develop skills and confidence regardless of their age or previous ability. Although Libraries Week 2022 lasts for one week only, it serves as an outreach event and as a reminder of the continual help and support that libraries have to offer their local communities.

To get involved, reach out to your local library to see what’s on. Follow @librariesweek on Twitter for all the latest updates and news.
