After the Netflix adaptation of Bridgerton shot to fame in late 2020 amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, audiences were left on tenterhooks awaiting more news from the enigmatic Lady Whistledown. Sex, conflict, and politics, adapted from the novels by Julia Quinn, has once again arrived on our screens in the form of Bridgerton season two. A new season with fresh faces such as Kate Sharma, played by Simone Ashley, and returning ones such as the Young Viscount, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey.
This season will follow Anthony Bridgerton as he becomes the most eligible bachelor amongst the socialites. Two sisters, Kate and Edwina Sharma, enter society and quickly become the talk of the town as they capture the attention of the Viscount. Although initially captured by the beautiful Edwina, the feisty, brooding Kate is ultimately the apple of Anthony’s eye. In an interview with Entertainment magazine, Bailey elaborates on this, “It’s an interesting love triangle…It’s bestial between them in a way season one wasn’t.” Kate isn’t one to just roll over for the Viscount’s rugged good looks as he tries to win her favour. It ultimately becomes a classic conflict of our protagonists’ heads and hearts.
We also return to the shocking cliff-hanger that season one left us on. Penelope Featherington, Nicola Coughlan, remains protected by her alter ego, Lady Whistledown, as she exploits and exposes the secrets of the Bridgerton universe. The trailer features her looking longingly at Colin Bridgerton, her beau from the first season. With this and her best friend’s attempts to uncover the identity of the gossip columnist, we can assume that Penelope will undergo massive character development during another titillating series of the award-winning show. This is confirmed by a quote from Coughlan herself in Screen Rant, “in series one, you know, she’s a shy, retiring wallflower, and then series two you go, ‘Oh, she’s got all this other stuff going on…”
Season two promises to be a jewel in the crown of, director, Julie Anne Robinson. The casting of Bridgerton is sublime and diverse, connecting with the mass audiences while still emulating the text. With the same lavish costumes and amazing attention to detail that we have indulged in during the first eight episodes,“ we can predict that it will be another stunning performance from all.”
