Game of Thrones alum Kate Dickie is set to star in the second series of the hit Disney+ show Loki, produced by Marvel Studios.
Dickie is best known for her roles in Prometheus (2012), Filth (2013) and her recurring performance as Lysa Arryn in Game of Thrones. However, she has also starred in many theatrical productions, including Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (1995) and Mayakovsky’s Blood and Water (1996).
Her breakthrough acting role came via the TV show Tinsel Town in 2000, in which she played one of the leads, receiving a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Television Performance. She has received numerous other accolades throughout her career, and is renowned for assuming the lives of, “damaged, repressed and ostensibly unsympathetic,” female characters. It isn’t known exactly who she will be playing in season two of Loki, though, according to Deadline, it is likely the character will be a villain.
In series one of Loki, the Marvel villain (played by Tom Hiddleston) is arrested by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) for stealing the tesseract and deviating from the ‘sacred timeline.’ Fans of the film franchise will remember the tesseract as the object of Loki’s desire, way back in 2012 in The Avengers. While being held at TVA headquarters, his help is enlisted by senior agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) to apprehend a Loki ‘variant’ from a different timeline. This variant, who goes by Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), has been killing several TVA officers and stealing technology. While hunting the variant, Loki uncovers information concerning not only the TVA and their origins, but also himself.
The first season performed well with critics and audiences alike, scoring a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an IMDb score of 8.2. It was hailed by the Independent as, “a wonderfully clever bit of narrative engineering,” helping to set up the ‘next phase,’ of the MCU. Filming for season two began in June 2022 and wrapped in October.
Season two will be directed and executive produced by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Other executive producers include Eric Martin, Hiddleston and Michael Waldron. It is expected the show will be released in the summer of 2023.
