Writer and performer Kat Lyons’ spoken word theatre show, Dry Season, which explores the experience of premature menopause, will tour this autumn.
Dry Season, inspired by Lyons’ difficulties navigating premature menopause at age 39, is described as a “witty and honest” autobiographical show. Audiences are invited to join Lyons’ journey “featuring anxiety, insomnia and self-conscious jogging” in an intimate solo production exploring their changing identity.
The show interweaves music, movement, and medical texts with poetry and animation. Dry Season explores societal expectations about aging and gender and aims to generate knowledge and empathy, alongside providing wider representation of the menopause.
The tour is produced by Rua Arts, with dramaturgy and movement direction by Laura Dannequin. Lighting design is by Sarah Readman, and animation is by Edalia Day. Funding has been provided by Arts Council England, with support from Artspace Lifespace, Camden People’s Theatre, Apples & Snakes, and Bristol Ferment.
Lyons is a Queer Bristol-based writer, performer, workshop facilitator and creative producer. They were recently named Bristol City Poet for 2022-2024 and nominated for the Jerwood Poetry in Performance Award 2022. Their debut collection, Love Beneath the Nails was published earlier in the year by Verve Poetry Press.
The tour begins at Stroud Theatre Festival on 16-18 September, followed by dates in Hove, Leicester, Bath and London.
