Speculation is rife that Julia Garner will play Madonna in a biopic the singer is currently working on with screenwriter Diablo Cody.

Rumours began after Madonna, 62, followed Julia Garner on Instagram. Despite having over 15 million followers, Madonna only follows 287 people, meaning her social media choices are significant, according to the Metro.

The significance of social media choices could also be represented by Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary, who also followed 26-year-old Garner on 28 August. Julia Garner looks very similar to a younger Madonna, leading individuals to think she might be a good fit for a biopic.

During lockdown, Madonna has posted numerous videos of her writing her life story with filmmaker Diablo Cody, as well as photographs of her old diaries from the 1980s. On 8 August, Madonna wrote on her Instagram: “When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries what do you do? Write a screenplay with Diablo Cody about…?”. A biopic hasn’t been fully confirmed.

Julia Garner is well known for starring in Netflix’s Ozark as a young criminal called Ruth Langmore, and will soon play convict Anna Sorokin in a Netflix limited series. She has also appeared in series The Americans and films including The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Martha Marcy May Marlene, We Are What We Are and The Assistant.

Diablo Cody has written screenplays for films including Young Adult, Juno and Jennifer’s Body, alongside the book for the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill. The musical explored the struggles of families in a suburban area in the 1990s.

Madonna has previously condemned plans for an unauthorised biopic of her life called Blonde Ambition, which was written by Elyse Hollander. While it was claimed by Universal Pictures, it hasn’t yet been produced. In 2017, Madonna tweeted her opposition, stating that “nobody knows what I know and what I have seen. Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool. Looking for instant gratification without doing the work. This is a disease in our society.”

Many have speculated that Madonna’s rumoured plans to create a biopic may be inspired by the success of the films Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018, which told the life of Queen singer Freddie Mercury, and the Elton John biopic Rocketman in 2019.
