American sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has announced that it will be returning to our screens in 2022 for Season 15 of the show, after a two-year hiatus. This will mean that the much-loved show, which follows a group of friends who own a bar called Paddy’s Pub in the state of Philadelphia, will break the record for the longest-running live-action sitcom of all time.
However, unlike the previous seasons of the show, the next chapter will not be set in Paddy’s Pub. Instead, the gang, which is made up of Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito), will embark on a vacation to Ireland.
See why we named It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia one of the best shows of the 2010s here.
Avid fans of the show will have noticed that members of the cast posted photos together in Ireland back in August 2021, whilst they filmed the new episodes. The trailer for the upcoming season was released on 10 November 2021 and can be watched below.
Earlier this year, McElhenney revealed the title of the new season’s first episode, which will be called ‘2020: Year In Review’, presumably tackling the Covid-19 pandemic throughout its storyline. The episode was written by McElhenney himself, alongside Day and Howerton.
The synopsis for the season reads: “In the seismic wake of Covid-19 and all things 2020, The Gang stands at a crossroads in this strange new world. The rules are changing quicker than anyone can keep up with, despite herculean efforts from Mac (Rob McElhenney), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) to continue business as usual.”
It continues, “Now, they must face the music and decide who they’ll become in the cultural upheaval that is 2021. Across the span of eight episodes — and the Atlantic Ocean — we find them answer in a way only they could think to.”
Following the airing of Season 14 in 2019, the show was renewed for four more seasons in December 2020. Therefore, Season 15 definitely won’t be It’s Always Sunny’s last, and the sitcom will continue to break its own record for years to come.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will return on 1 December 2021 on FXX, and will be available to stream on FX on Hulu the following day.
