Combining the throaty contralto of Amy Winehouse’s voice with the earthy spiritual vibe of Dead Can Dance, Brooklyn’s Digit + Stas is the reconciliation between your racing conscience and your tapping toes. The St. Petersburg-born, well-travelled Nastasia Avrutin has put together a five song EP of pieces with deep roots in the earth surrounded by a swarm of digital waves.

Violet, the new album released June 27th, begins with the welcoming incantation of ‘Find’. Her voice reassuringly chants “We are here” and “We will find our way” over Celtic hand drums and a brass fanfare. There’s an old wisdom in her voice, channelling her invocations from the planet’s core.

Lead single ‘Doors’ crashes in with a dope beat. The gang claps along as the alluvial singer does vocal gymnastics over low flying synths. Her voice warbles in Indian scales capturing a world-weariness. These songs would be an ideal soundtrack to films like Baraka and Samsara which showcase the wonders and horrors of the world.

Digit + Stas is music to pick you back up when you’re feeling spiritually bankrupt and need a top up. Good for heady late nights or contemplative next mornings.
