My Own Summer (Shove It) // Deftones

Back in the day when I was about eleven years old, Zane Lowe had a music show on MTV2 called Gonzo where he would interview bands and play some of their videos. I always used to hop around the music channels, usually being greeted with the unrelenting drool of Nickleback’s ‘How You Remind Me’ for the 846th time, but this time I tuned in to see that Deftones were Zane Lowe’s guest on Gonzo. I had no idea who they were at the time but I remember they played ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’ and I was blown away. The loud/quiet dynamic, Chino Moreno’s sultry yet devastating vocal performance and a chorus that harnessed as much groove as it did heaviness meant that I was captivated. A couple of days later my mum took me to HMV for the first time and bought me Around the Fur. To this day Deftones remain my favourite band of all time, with Around the Fur claiming the title of being my favourite album ever.
