Disney + has announced the fan-favourite High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will end its successful run with season four, which is set to premiere this summer.
The series follows a group of teenagers with a passion for musical theatre (with casting including Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, and Dara Reneé). Throughout the season, they put on productions of the High School Musical movies, as well as other well-known musicals. Set in the familiar location of East High, the high school that featured in the string of popular films, the newest set of Wildcats recreate the magic of some of our favourite High School Musical moments.
The fourth and final season sees the students return to school after the summer, to prepare for their next production ‘High School Musical 3: Senior Year.’ Though things don’t exactly go as planned when it’s revealed that Disney has decided to make the movie ‘High School Musical 4: The Reunion’ at East High.
The reunion is unlikely to disappoint, as we are set to be reunited with some of the original High School Musical cast as guest stars. They include Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans), Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton), Kaycee Stroh (Martha Cox) and Alyson Reed (Ms. Darbus). Though not featured in the trailer, fans are still holding out hope for a surprise appearance of High School Musical’s very own Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens). This speculation comes after both actors recently posted pictures of themselves in front of their character’s former high school. You can watch the season four trailer below:
In an Instagram post following the news of the show taking its final bow, show runner Tim Federle said: “After four years at East High, it’s time to graduate. This will be our final, endgame season. This show brought the most extraordinary cast—and crew, and collaborators—to my life. To the fans, who embraced our super-meta series: we ‘don’t not love you.’ We can’t wait to share this epic fourth act with you all.”
Since premiering back in 2019, the reboot has garnered legions of adoring fans and launched the hugely successful career of the pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo.
The final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series premieres on Disney + on 9 August. Seasons one to three are available to stream now.
