WarnerMedia has confirmed a fourth season of DC’s Harley Quinn animated series, with two episodes of the third season still to release on HBO Max.
In a sea of mass cancellations at HBO, there was some uncertainty around the fate of this DC animation, but the adult dark comedy, starring a post-Joker Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and her girlfriend Poison Ivy, (Lake Bell) has seen high praise. In addition to a GLAAD nomination for its portrayal of the Harley/Ivy romance, the show won Best Animated Series at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards.
The series is also a hit amongst fans, particularly those identifying as LGBTQ+. The show confirmed the romance between Harley and Ivy in season two and the pair became official in the finale. The show accepted its fanbase with open arms, advertising itself as ‘for the gays’ in its season three trailer.
Creators and showrunners of the first three seasons, Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, stated, “we are ecstatic that HBO Max wants the story of Harley and Ivy to continue.” The show also boasts a star-studded cast of guest and recurring voices, including Tony Hale (Arrested Development) as Dr Psycho, Tom Hollander (Pride and Prejudice, Pirates of the Caribbean) as Alfred, and Harvey Guillén (What We Do In The Shadows) as Nightwing/Dick Grayson.
Season four will mark writer and producer Sarah Peters’ (Workaholics, Master of None) promotion to showrunner. This is following the announcement that Halpern and Schumacker will be turning their attention to a series spin-off, Noonan’s. Noonan’s will focus on Poison Ivy’s loveable ex-fiancé, Kite Man (Matt Oberg), as Noonan’s Bar’s owners. Schumacker has dubbed the spin-off “a Cheers for supervillains.”
Halpern and Schumacker are “thrilled that this next season will be in great hands with Sarah Peters as our showrunner and Ceci Aranovich overseeing animation production, as they have both greatly influenced the show with their brilliance since the beginning.”
