The company announced the move after the PlayStation Network was down.
Following the downtime of the PlayStation Network yesterday (January 4), PlayStation have announced that members of PS Plus – which allows online gaming – and PlayStation Now – which allows online game streaming – would have their subscriptions extended.
PlayStation sent out the following tweet today (January 5):
Thanks for your patience today – stay tuned for details on PS Plus, PS Now, and video rental extensions.

No reason has been given to explain the outage, however some users have said they were greeted with maintenance messages after attempting to login to their accounts.
