The company is looking to venture outside games publishing.

Activision announced today (January 5) that is has purchased Major League Gaming – the company behind the live-streaming of gaming events and esports tournaments.

MLG will now become part of Activision Blizzard’s Media Network, while retaining it’s MLG.tv, MLG Pro Circuit and GameBattles brands.

In a statement confirming the acquisition, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, “Our acquisition of Major League Gaming’s business furthers our plans to create the ESPN of esports. MLG’s ability to create premium content and its proven broadcast technology platform – including its live-streaming capabilities – strengthens our strategic position in competitive gaming. MLG has an incredibly strong and seasoned team and a thriving community. Together, we will create new ways to celebrate players and their unique skills, dedication and commitment to gaming. We are excited to add Sundance and the entire MLG esports team to our competitive gaming initiatives.”

The move follows on from last year’s launch of Activision Blizzard’s film production company, which is currently developing films based around the Call of Duty franchise and a Skylanders TV series.
