Console Two: The Nintendo 64
Years of Production: 1996 – 2002, Final Game: Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage
In a gaming battlefield where CDs were becoming increasingly popular as a storage choice for many of the biggest and best games, the humble cartridge suddenly wasn’t the natural home anymore. Although seemingly disadvantaged because of this, the Nintendo 64 still shifted well and was manufactured up until 2002. Its last ever game release was Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage (2001).
Gracing the N64 back in 2001, this 3D role-playing game was developed by H2O Entertainment and published by THQ. The gamer plays as a young squire named Alaron who runs into some evil goblins while on a quest to locate a missing farmer. Aralon gets poisoned and is then sent off by his king in search a cure along with a number of other adventurers alongside him.
This RPG is regarded by some reviewers as a slow paced release that was big in ambition. IGN called Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage a “tedious experience” that was too large, giving it a poor 42/100. There were more positive reviews but they didn’t award the game a final score that was any higher than average. Perhaps this title wasn’t a part of the N64’s finest hour.
