Sony Pictures have announced that the sequel to the cult classic Zombieland has been given the go-ahead, and is rumoured to begin production in Atlanta, Georgia this August. During this year’s CinemaCon, a very minimalistic logo attached to the new film was debuted, putting an end to years of rumours circling a next instalment.

While little is actually known about the follow-up feature, it has been confirmed that director Reuben Fleischer and writers Rhett Resse and Paul Wernick are set to return. Additionally, Dave Callaham, who has a story credit for the 2014 reboot of Godzilla, is also joining to aid in writing the script.

Zombieland, which debuted in 2009, brought in more than $100 million dollars, making it one of the highest grossing zombie films of all time. It starred Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin, although none have confirmed their appearance for the sequel.

In 2013, Amazon released a pilot episode for a Zombieland television series, but it was quickly cancelled after including none of the original cast members and was met with poor reviews. Let’s hope all four main actors return to reprise their characters, otherwise Sony Pictures runs the risk of another failure.

No release date for Zombieland 2 has been announced as of yet, but we should expect to see it in theatres sometime over the next few years, before the zombie hype wears off.
