Film News: Shining Reviews for Ghostbusters reboot

“I ain’t ‘fraid of no ghost!”

And neither are the reviews coming in for Paul Feig’s reboot of the 1984 classic. Phew! We can all rest easy knowing that the massive backlash towards the all female cast was probably (most definitely) just a bunch of “meninist” supporters wrongfully moaning that women ruin everything, including the fictional ghost busting universe.

Earlier this year, the trailer for perhaps one of the most anticipated movies of 2016 was released, and was immediately met with an outpouring of negative feedback. The new Ghostbusters trailer now rests in YouTube’s top ten most disliked videos, and is the most hated movie trailer of all time. But was it really that bad, or are fans of the original just upset by the gender swap of the original cast?

According to many reputable movie critics, Feig’s Ghostbusters is actually highly enjoyable, and although it is a stretch to say that it’s on par with the original, this reboot is surely a summer blockbuster hit. While the worst parts of the movie seem to come from the slow pacing, the one standout feature of the film is, in fact, its all female cast.

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Kristen Wiig, and current members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones team up with arguable one of the funniest comedic stars today, Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Mike and Molly), to deliver a gut-wrenching good time. But perhaps the one consistent part of the reviews shed light on McKinnon, and her hysterical and impulsive performance. Rosie Fletcher from Digital Spy claims “…It’s all about Kate McKinnon…she’s a revelation.” In an industry overrun by men, it is nice to see such funny and brilliant women in one of this years most anticipated movies.

Manohla Dargis of the New York Times sums it up best by saying: “Girls rule, women are funny, get over it.”
