From the opening shot of the far-too-drunk Carey Mulligan alone in a club to the neon lights and orchestral version of “Toxic” playing in the background, Promising Young Woman declares itself immediately as an intriguing film. This trailer has already captured the imagination of many across social media, and has placed itself firmly in support of the #MeToo movement.
Leaving little mystery as to the surface level of this plot, the trailer reveals a woman seeking revenge on rapists after something happens to her friend – a hinted-at rape turned murder. As in many other films, here revenge is a bountiful playground for thriller writers – just look at the likes of John Wick (2014) and Kill Bill (2003). If anything, knowing the baseline plot makes me more excited to see Promising Young Woman. Its cards are decisively on the table, almost daring you to watch it.
Promising Young Woman looks poised to expose and boldly explore an overwhelmingly large issue that has been in the zeitgeist for years now, but is not regularly addressed in mainstream film or television for fear of backlash. Thankfully, Promising Young Woman is not afraid. This looks like it is going to be a galvanising experience for anyone who has ever felt ignored or dismissed by the systemic denial of rape victim’s trauma. It is a stylish, witty, and important addition to cinema. Hopefully it can live up to its promises.
