After an awards season rife with controversy, infighting and a lot of white men, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its list of Oscars nominations for the past twelve months of film. With some welcome surprises and a smidgeon more diversity than the BAFTAs could trudge up, there is also the usual level of denunciation. Most of the fury has been aimed at Joker, which is this year’s top contender after scooping an extraordinary 11 nominations.
The gloriously breathtaking Parasite has been honored with 5 nominations, including the coveted Best Picture nod. Similarly, it’s lovely to see underdog The Lighthouse edge in with a cinematography recognition for the marvelous Jarin Blaschke, Florence Pugh score a nomination for Little Women and Ad Astra for Sound Mixing. There were some notable snubs, though: Lupita Nyong’o’s stunning performance in Us has been ignored all awards season, and Taron Egerton missed out on a nomination for his role in Rocketman despite scooping the Golden Globe for Best Actor just last week. Many were also hoping Greta Gerwig would break into the all-male directing category, but has instead has to settle for Adapted Screenplay.
