Humans will arrive on a mysterious planet to discover that the remote land is more dangerous than it initially seems. The Weyland Corporation will be up to no good. There will be an android. Monsters will *probably* burst out of people’s chests. It could only be Ridley Scott. It could only be Alien.
The first hints about the content of the latest film in the Alien franchise have arrived. So, what do we know?
Alien: Covenant, the sequel to 2012’s Prometheus – the prequel to 1979’s Alien – is due to be released in autumn 2017. The synopsis reveals that the film will feature Michael Fassbender’s character, David, the android who survived Prometheus alive but who was reduced to a dismembered head in the process.
Alien enthusiasts have also been treated to this hint:
Weyland Corp have merged with Yutani to form Weyland-Yutani, the corporation featured in Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3. The Weyland slogan, ‘building better worlds’, is featured on this badge, suggesting that Weyland Corp haven’t learnt their lesson from Prometheus. Their ruthlessly expansionist approach to the galaxy will most likely land a new generation of astronauts in peril.
The word ‘covenant’ also features prominently on the badge. As the film is called Alien: Covenant, this word is obviously significant. Is it a clue? A word with strong religious connotations, a covenant is a sacred agreement between a God and a mortal community.
The big question fans have for now is what happened to Elizabeth? Dr Elizabeth Shaw survived Prometheus alongside David, but will not return in Alien: Covenant. Is she dead? Only time will tell.
