Australian writer and director Baz Luhrmann (known for films such as Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!) has recently been granted the rights to the classic Russian novel The Master and Margarita. The news follows the cast announcement of Luhrmann’s other upcoming film as he recently jumped on the biopic bandwagon. Following Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman, Austin Butler and Tom Hanks will star in Luhrmann’s currently untitled Elvis Presley biopic.

The Master and Margarita was originally written by Mikhail Bulgakov between 1929 and 1940 during the Soviet Union. The plot includes a visit from the devil to the Soviet Union and combines the supernatural, satire, religion and comedy. In 2005 a Russian TV adaptation was made, and now Luhrmann intends to bring it to the big screen.

Not much else is known about the film as it’s still early days, but there will no doubt be a pretty long wait. The Elvis Presley biopic is still in production and not expected in cinemas until 2021.
