After 2013’s solid but unspectacular The Weight of Your Love, this was a record that I was apprehensive about, however any misgivings I may have had were quickly dispelled when I heard the first single and album opener, ‘No Harm’. It’s a hypnotic song that builds deliciously with layered synth melodies that come and go around front-man Tom Smith’s baritone vocal. Piano-led ‘Ocean of Night’ is what would happen if The Streets’ song ‘The Weak Become Heroes’ met The National – and it’s great. ‘Forgiveness’ and ‘Salvation’ are two instances where the band effortlessly turn up the proportions to stadium level, whilst on ‘Life Is A Fear’ and ‘Our Love’ the band channel some Pet Shop Boys vibes. The album closer ‘Marching Orders’ features the bands biggest chorus yet and leaves on a high note, signaling that this is a band who’ve once more found their stride.
