This Year’s Ghost are an up and coming rock band based in London. Although they were formed in early 2013, their hard working approach has seen them play a range of gigs across the UK. They have credentials in the alternative scene, with their members previously supporting the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, While She Sleeps, and The Devil Wears Prada. They take their influence from artists such as Deftones, Soundgarden, and Biffy Clyro. The band release their debut EP Yesterday Becomes Tomorrow Today on 20th November, produced by Matt Hyde (Slipknot, Funeral For a Friend).

‘Death Of A Gift’ contains a bouncy southern-rock intro; the track is catchy and vocally it is reminiscent of Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy. The vocals sit low in the mix, which is a shame because the delivery is honest and passionate. ‘December Sun’ incorporates driving post-hardcore influenced guitars, which are suitable for head banging. The chorus is atmospheric and reflective, showing off the band’s songwriting skills.

The next track, ‘Carry Us in Blue’ features a pummeling riff that would fit well into a live setting. Despite the lyrics and instrumentation being beautifully arranged, the chorus sounds gutless. ‘Silver Tongue’, however, packs a strong punch, Hyde’s production shining through on Jake Tellinghusen’s drums. The reverb on Paul McKenzie’s vocals indicates a sound suitable for stadiums, giving off a raw feel.

Although there are some patchy moments on the EP, the hard-hitting production and emotional lyrics show that This Year’s Ghost are capable of big things in the future.
