After months of speculation following the release of Elden Ring, FromSoftware has finally revealed that a DLC expansion is in the works in a timely tweet following the game’s first anniversary.
Let the Speculation Begin…
While there has been ample time for speculation, the developers of the Soulsbourne series revealed that the expansion will be called Shadow of the Erdtree. At this stage, we know very little about the expansion beyond the title and artwork released by FromSoftware, however, gleaning what we can from the image, it can be assumed that it will revolve around the character, Miquella.
In the image, we see what looks to be a decaying Erdtree looming over a field of ghostly gravestones, coffins and ruined archways. It as a far cry from the glorious golden Erdtree we have come to recognise in The Lands Between. In the foreground however is a single figure riding our trusty spectral steed, Torrent. While it is not yet confirmed, it is thought that this character could be Miquella, as their design seems consistent with the brief glimpses of them we have had in-game.
Players have been speculating that Miquella would form the basis of any DLC content as the character, despite being relatively unseen outside of environmental motifs, plays a huge part in the lore of Elden Ring, particularly in its optional content.
A Timely Expansion
Last year, Elden Ring topped many a player’s end-of-year lists and won a slew of accolades, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards and Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards. To that end, it always felt inevitable that there was more to come. At the end of last year, players were treated to an update that focussed on PvP in the colosseum arenas that litter the world.
While there isn’t much to go on presently, the confirmation that an expansion is upon us will satisfy many a tarnished. Only time will tell what is in store for players, and the new adventures they will embark on.
