Eiza González will star in the Spanish-language miniseries La Máquina alongside Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal.
The pugilistic series was picked up by Hulu earlier this year and follows an ageing boxer Esteban (García Bernal) who has been given one last shot at a title thanks to his crafty manager (Luna). However, in order to make it to fight night, they must first navigate a mysterious underworld force.
Gonzalez has been cast in the role of Irasema – an aspiring sports journalist who considers boxing an art form. She is also the ex-wife of Esteban, who she still cares deeply for, and a mother to their two children.
González is best known for playing rebellious characters in action movies such as Baby Driver and Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw and the black comedy thriller I Care a lot. She first rose to fame in 2007 when she landed the role of Lola Valente in the Mexican musical telenovela Lola, érase una vez. She subsequently became well-established in her home country, appearing in numerous other Mexican shows such as Mujeres Asesinas, Sueña conmigo and Amores Verdaderos.
More recently, she has starred in Michael Bay’s Ambulance opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen and has just finished filming Apple TV+’s anthology series Extrapolations, working alongside Meryl Streep, Forest Whitaker, and Marion Cotillard.
Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna will also produce the series through their production company La Corriente del Golfo, alongside Disney’s television branch of Searchlight Television. The two Mexican actors are lifelong friends and have appeared together in many projects together such as Rudo y Cursi, Casa de mi Padre and Alfonso Cuarón’s critically acclaimed 2001 film Y tu mamá también.
They will be joined by director Gabriel Ripstein and Marco Ramirez who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner.
In a statement to Deadline, Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum share their excitement for the onscreen reunion of García Bernal and Luna for La Maquina: “Their friendship and chemistry is a joy to experience. And we’re delighted to be working with Marco, whose unique voice and vision allows us to explore this world in a wholly original way.”
The series will stream on Disney’s DTC platforms and as a Hulu Original in the U.S.
